In the real world, there are bad guys (black) and also the good guys (white). Not surprisingly, in the digital world, there is black hat vs white hat SEO too.
So what is
Back hat?
Black hat is the unethical ways of doing SEO and some of the ways are:
- Creating links from sites with irrelevant contents
- Creating stuffed and invisible keywords
- Creating the same content
- Re-direct or cloaking user to another page or site
The above are some of the methods used to fool the search engine to give a better ranking to their site/page which does not benefit the user. Others examples of black hat SEO include scraping, hidden text, link farms, doorway pages, comment spamming, paid links/content etc. If possible please avoid these methods as it is unacceptable to the internet community and your competitors might file a spam report with Google against you.
what is
White hat then?
White hat is the ethical way of doing SEO! which are:
- Relevant and unique page titles
- Well-labeled images
- Relevant contents, links, and references
- HTML which is standard-compliance
- Complete sentences with good spelling and grammar
These techniques benefit both the visitors and the search engines, however, this method is a slower and is an ongoing process. Some other examples of white hat SEO are internal linking, site optimization, guest blogging, creating quality content, link baiting, semantic markup etc.
Having comparing with the black and the white, in fact for those who was thinking about the "GRAY ZONE", they are absolutely right! There is something call the
Gray hat SEO too. However, the gray hat is not between black and white but rather tactics which remain not well-defined by published material out from Google. So does it really matter? Definitely! Because a clear understanding of it will help you in your site's ranking without any negative consequences and get more traffics. Some example of gray hat tactics is buying expired or old domains, rewriting or spinning articles, Google washing and bombing etc.
Conclusion, as Google's algorithms keep getting stricter and smarter, the best rule of thumb is to be the "good guy" adopt the white hat strategy! As the saying goes, be a good guy and never afraid of the policeman!
